Cycled AC From Elk River Municipal Utilities
Electric utilities have historically built more power plants and powerlines to meet ever increasing summer demands. Today, they are exploring new ways to reduce demand without reducing service. It’s called Load Management. Cycled AC is an example.

It Costs A Lot!
It takes a lot of money to build power plants and powerlines, and that increases the costs of electricity
and impacts the environment. There are two ways to deal with the problem. One is to continue to build more facilities, the other is to somehow control summer demand. You can be a part of that least cost solution.
On those critical peak summer days when the temperature is 90ºF or higher and dewpoint is 70ºF or higher, set your AC thermostat up 5 degrees at 5 p.m. That’s “Dial Up Five At Five”. Also, “Wait Till Eight” to use other high use electric appliances. But if you want to have an even greater impact, Join our Cycled AC Program before the cooling season begins.
Why Participate In Cycled AC?
We all have an obligation to use our energy resources more wisely than we have in the past! Cycling AC on peak summer days reduces the need to burn coal to produce electricity. That’s good for the environment! It also helps keep a lid on our wholesale power costs and your rates. If you really want to help control your costs and ours, join Our Cycled AC Program today by calling 441-2020 to sign up for the Program.
We’ll Pay You $40 This Summer!
And next summer, and next summer and………$40 for every summer you remain on our new Cycled AC Program! Elk River Municipal Utilities revised its Cycled Air Conditioning Program in 2002. We still cycle your air conditioner 15 minutes on 15 minutes off for a few hours each summer with a remote control switch. But now there is absolutely no cost for you to join! We pay a licensed electrical contractor to install the remote control switch and give you $40 every summer to let us cycle your AC. The $40 rebate is in lieu of the special rate previously offered under the old program. The best thing about this new Program is, you save two ways, by helping Elk River Municipal Utilities reduce our costs and ultimately your rates, and we pay you to let us cycle your AC.
It’s a win win Program. We cover all your costs to join, we pay you $40 per summer, we reduce our power costs and ultimately your rates, and we help improve the environment just a little bit more!!
How Do I Sign Up?
Start the process by considering the fact that your house may warm up slightly on the few days each summer when ERMU needs to reduce load. We endeavor to limit control periods to no more than 6 hours per day and less than 200 hours each summer. Last summer we cycled ACs 98 hours. If this is acceptable to you, simply give us a call at 441-2020 and we’ll do the rest!
No Blackouts Here Yet, But… The next unusually hot summer may bring some surprises --- power shortages. While the upper midwest is not resource constrained like some parts of the country, electricity shortages could occur here as well. Electric utilities are at times “strained to the max” to meet peak demands on hot summer days. The problem is air conditioners – too many of them all on at the same time! A two and one-half ton air conditioner places the same demand on an electric system as 40 one hundred watt light bulbs! That takes a lot of power. Electric utilities have to continuously expand their systems to meet that ever increasing summer demand. That costs money!
