Elk River Municipal Utilities (ERMU) supports renewable energy generation resources and so can you. Every year ERMU purchases renewable energy from Great River Energy as part of our overall supply. For a small premium each month, you can increase your support of renewable energy by purchasing additional energy generated by wind in blocks of 100 kilowatt-hours. Each additional block is $0.80 per month.
Commercial customers can also participate in renewable energy production. Please call 763.441.2020 for information and possible rebates the installation of customer owned Solar PV systems.
ERMU also participates in renewable energy with the Landfill Gas to Electric (LFG) plant. There are four 1,200 HP engines that burn the methane gas that is released from the decomposing garbage to produce electricity. In 2012, 9.5% (26 million kWh) of ERMU’s annual energy was produced at the LFG plant. The LFG plant produces a valuable commodity (electricity) from a waste product (methane) that is roughly 21% more detrimental to the environment as a greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide.
