Elk River Municipal Utilities is in the process of installing new water meters & ERT
(Encoder Receiver Transmitter). Water meters must be replaced approximately every twenty years.
With new ERT technology, Elk River Municipal Utilities is able to electronically read meters by driving
by the meter location instead of reading the meter from the side of the house. All of our water
customers who do not currently have the new ERT technology should make an appointment for a

Meters are typically located in the basement next to the water heater, where the water enters the
house from the street. A water meter change out takes approximately 20 minutes or less. Our
available times are M-F 7am-3pm, but we are able to work outside office hours if absolutely
necessary.
